Self-Abuse

Recommended reading for self-harm and self-abuse.

A Bright Red Scream: Self Mutilation and the Language of Pain - often clients deliberately harm themselves in order to gain relief from emotional pain that have been left unresolved from traumatic childhood experiences. If children do not learn to regulate their emotions, which gives them a sense of self-control, they can often feel out of control and helpless, resorting to self-mutilation techniques as a way of disassociating with the negative memories - it becomes a coping mechanism. This book explores techniques to work through this trauma, using a combination of psychotherapy, CBT and medication to eliminate self-abuse.
